Imperial Fine Books Inc.

“I started working for J.N. Bartfield Galleries in 1976, worked for them for 13 years, then opened my bookshop in 1989. We specialize in leather bound sets, fine bindings, children’s, Cosways, jeweled bindings, first and rare editions.”

Imperial Fine Books Inc was established in 1989 by Bibi Mohamed, who has been a rare book specialist for more than 35 years. Located on Madison Avenue, New York, the company prides itself on being “brightly lit, hospitable and refreshingly affordable”. As well as selling a variety of rare books, Imperial also painstakingly rebind, restore and clean pieces that are brought in by its clients. Imperial's expertise also extends to helping collectors create beautiful private libraries; for this work it has earned a number of appraisals from the New York Times to Town and Country.

Imperial Fine Books particularly specialise in leather bound sets, fine bindings, children’s, Cosways, jewelled bindings, first and rare editions. The current collection holds a range of fascinating items including:

37 volumes. Thomas Hardy The Works [Mellstock Editions], London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1919-20. Exquisitely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in a basket-weave design, full blue calf, signed in the first volume.

31 volumes. The Bombay Edition of the Works of Rudyard Kipling. London: Macmillan & Co Ltd, 1913-38. Signed in volume one, bound in 3/4 blue Morocco by Asprey.

There's also an interesting selection of Conway-style bindings and other fine sets and exhibition bindings.

We were delighted to hear that one of the reasons Bibi decided to exhibit at Firsts London this year was because we'll be open on a Sunday.

To see more from Bibi and her team - on Friday, Saturday or Sunday - do join us at the Fair.
